Antique bottles and
other objects from the kitchen make wonderful subjects for still-life paintings
because of their beautiful shapes and colors. I really enjoyed painting these
objects with abstract collage and negative shape painting. The white horizontal
lines are used to balance the strong verticals created by the objects.
Among the first to start abstracting still life scenes were Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. As artists experimented with new forms of abstraction, still life painting became a favored genre that let them play with various arrangements of textures, shapes, and colors.
