Continuing my current passion of painting contemporary flowers with abstraction. The painting starts with a mark – simple and straightforward. But then there is another and another, a splotch of color and some scraping. Parts of it are subtle and minimal, while others are bold, colorful and expansive.

Last year in August i visited Byam Farms in Chelmsford for a quick sketches and photo study session of the farm. The small farm is attached to the Barrett–Byam Homestead is a historic house, headquarters of the Chelmsford Historical Society.
This painting is inspired by their collection of Apple trees, using a dynamic diagonal composition.
This is my first painting of the new year. Happy New Year!!

My Theme for this challenge is going to be as the name suggests "Postcards from India" - I am going to combine my love for Indian art and my new love for painting contemperory abstracts into small paintings/postcards with Indian motifs. I am working from the many photos i took during my trips and creative abstract backgrounds.

Yellow Road

This painting is more an experiment in painting summer greens with a row of yellow trees to create a focal point.

Picasso said, "They'll sell you thousands of greens. Veronese green and emerald green and cadmium green and any sort of green you like; but that particular green, never." The variety and intensity of greens that occur in nature is quite awesome. When mixing a green, use the fact that green has either a blue or a yellow bias as the starting point in determining the proportions you mix. (But remember the shade of green something is in a landscape does change depending on the time of day and what was a bluish green this morning may well be a yellowish green this evening.)
Each different blue/yellow combination will give a different green, plus the variations from the proportions of each you mix. Also experiment mixing with two blues and two yellows; and mixing blue or yellow to a 'ready-made' green.Mix a little black with various yellows and you’ll see that it produces a range of muted (or ‘dirty’) greens and khakis. (Remember to add the black to the yellow, not yellow to black;). Adding a touch of red also helps to break a bright green.

"New England Fall"
This painting is sold to a wonderful lady who saw it last year at  the Chelmsford library solo show but did not have the budget for it then . She later messaged me in Feb. (months later), to fine out if it was still available. It was so i sold it to her for the lower price i had at the show.

"Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird's back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains.
It is the national bird of India, and has several references in Indian myths, legends and religious scriptures.


The background design is done with a resist/masking technique in warm colors to showcase the purples and blues on the body of the bird. 

This year i have 3 commissions for peacock paintings, so i am going to paint several paintings of peacocks in various sizes. This is the first one!

In this painting the contemporary dark background works to off set the white/light areas of the flower petals. The flower is in sharp focus vs the softer/blended background. The warm yellows contrast well with the cooler blues and purples.This is a painting of contrasts!
Lilacs are very popular in parks and gardens. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University has a special day long celebration in May in honor of lilacs - Lilac Sunday is a Boston tradition.

This is the 3rd and final painting for my triptych. Another very common flower in this area - has wonderful varieties. They have large, often fragrant flowers ranging from pink, red to white and yellow.
