This painting has been reworked from an older painting from "Off The Grid" series.
This is mixed media abstract and acrylic painting on a large wood panel. My process involves building up layers of paint and collage as I express myself emotionally. I work on multiple pieces at one time exploring the same idea or theme in different ways. Working on many pieces at once gives me liberty to express myself freely without getting too controlling at an early stage. As I am working, each painting speaks to me differently. It is important to allow each painting to evolve naturally. When the meaning or idea emerges, I start to make decisions about color and composition to bring the work to completion.

Acrylic and mixed media on canvas
12" x12"
$275
So many times I find
that an old canvas provides fresh new inspiration! This was an older
canvas where I have created a raised pattern with a new medium - molding
paste - and then I fell in love with the pattern and could not move
past that. So I put it aside.
Then a few days ago on a cleaning
spree I found it and decided to be brave and ‘kill my darling’ pattern.
Saving some of it and painting white over the rest. That opened up a
host of opportunities. The rest is history as they say.
So many lessons in this story!!!
1. Make a lot of work to allow your skills to catch up with your aesthetic.
2. Be patient
3. Build in layers
4. Enjoy the process and fall in love often
5. Try new things
On another note i will be selling my paintings at LexArt open studios event on May 20 and 21, 2023.

Small mixed media on wood board
6" x 6"
$75
This painting is a small study for a larger painting. Hope you guessed Andy is Andy Warhol.
"Warhol’s 1964 series Flowers, however, is a refreshing and surprising departure from the artists’ initial themes of pop culture and commercialism, and every spring, critics are reminded of the influence that his nature-focused work continues to have on the art world."
mixed media on paper
18" X 24"

Layers, layers, and more layers, that’s what this painting is all about. Seeing how one covers the next and then revealing what’s underneath is fascinating. I have recently been adding the use of collage, stencils , text and cut paper to the mix. The result is more nuance, depth, and interest. Using the positive or negative of the stencil and then adding paint to blur or soften the image gives it a nice richness and a sense of history.
Mixed media on paper

Lots of layers and mixed media experimenting to reach a finish point.....To create this painting i used
a plethora of techniques and ways of working with mixedmedia, collage, paint and a variety of markmaking tools.
The colors in this painting are inspired by beach life - soft turquoise, seashell, taupe, sandy pearl.

"Disrupted Realism: Paintings for a Distracted World"
Nicholas Wilton has a wonderful interview on You tube with the author https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PxkIRhBZ5Q
Disrupted Realism is the first book to survey the works of contemporary painters who are challenging and reshaping the tradition of Realism. Helping art lovers, collectors, and artists approach and understand this compelling new phenomenon, it includes the works of 38 artists whose paintings respond to the subjectivity and disruptions of modern experience. Widely published author and blogger John Seed, who believes that we are “the most distracted society in the history of the world,” has selected artists he sees as visionaries in this developing movement. The artists’ impulses toward disruption are as individual as the artists themselves, but all share the need to include perception and emotion in their artistic process. Six sections lay out and analyze common themes: "Toward Abstraction," "Disrupted Bodies," "Emotions and Identities," "Myths and Visions," "Patterns, Planes, and Formations," and "Between Painting and Photography." Interviews with each artist offer additional insight into some of the most incisive and relevant painting being created today.
Observe the negative spaces within the simple compositions creating dynamic tension.
Observe the repetition and placement of similar shapes within the composition.

Playing with the heart shape as any other shape - circle, square, etc. More than any other shape the heart shape has cliched feelings/ emotions attached to it and that makes it even more exciting to work with as an artist.

Then in 2018, i started researching collage work and found a friend who does this type of work, So earlier this year (2019) i went to visit her, took a class with her - Jennifer H. - she was very kind and wonderful and taught me a few basics to get me started. In January, this year i also took a class with Jean Carter at the Concord Art Assoc. she taught me more about how to be free with shapes and how they all go together.
Here are a few examples of my collages inspired by Matisse-
